A 71-year-old woman has been named as the victim of a "" in a quiet neighbourhood in Belfast. Ms Marie Green was tragically pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning after raced to the scene in the Shore Road area in the north of the city. A 31-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of her murder, which has left the local community deeply shocked and saddened.
Residents reported a huge police presence in the area overnight, with one neighbour : "I'm just in complete shock."
Another added: "Everybody is shocked, there were a lot of police about this morning. There is a bit of fear there as well. We just don't know what happened yet."
A PSNI spokesperson said this afternoon: "Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation following the death of a woman in a house in the Shore Road area of north Belfast.
"Police, along with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, responded to a report received just before midnight on June 2."
North Belfast DUP MLA Phillip Brett said: "There is massive shock and sadness in the Shore Road community following last night's tragic incident. I have spoken with the police and they will be releasing a statement later today. An arrest has been made. My thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted."
Detective Inspector Jennifer Rea, from the Police Service's Major Investigation Team, added: "My thoughts are with Marie's family and loved ones who are left trying to come to terms with their tragic loss. A man, aged 31, who was arrested on suspicion of murder, remains in police custody at this time.
"Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances, and I am appealing to anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact detectives on 101. Please quote reference 2020 of 02/06/25."
