A fish and chips shop recently named one of the best in the UK has left many customers far from impressed. Found on Brighton's historic Lanes, RYBKA has become a popular fish and chip eatery among locals, with its name meaning "the fish likes to swim" in Polish.
According to its site, RYBKA serves "the perfect combination of classic fish & chips and great drinks" with their fish "always responsibly sourced and served alongside our signature chips (not your classic pub chip, mind)." And named the Brighton establishment as the second best chippy in all of the UK.
However, despite gaining the special title, an array of customers have been left unhappy, posting far from impressed reviews on TripAdvisor. One review read: "Batter crispy..fish was nice and hot but the absolute let down was the frozen chips...very chunky and quite brown.
"If you are a fish and chip shop charging just under £20 for your fish and chips, make your own chips. "Ketchup in plastic cafe bottle was like water..mushy peas had no flavour and dark green..sorry really wanted to love this after reading reviews but lacked flavour."
The harsh comments unfortunately didn't end there with reviews calling it "disappointing" with "expensive fish" and "rude staff".
"Googled best fish n chips in and this place popped up," wrote one TripAdvisor review.
"Chips over done and fish oily as hell. Should have had chips on the beach front instead. Not sit in a place charging you £20 for fish n chips and not very welcoming."
said of RYBKA: "Sure, Brighton's cracking collection of pubs and chippies make tough competition for the best fish 'n' chips in the city, but you'd be hard pressed to come by a zestier tartare or crispier batter.
"Rybka serves have-in portions on retro canteen trays, and its quaint Lanes location means it's something of a lesser-known gem - there's even a DJ on occasionally."
But not all felt the love for Rybka with another TripAdvisor review writing: "When planning my trip to Brighton, this place came up as one of the best fish and chips restaurants and was highly reviewed.
"Because of that, maybe my expectations were just a bit too high. Everything was fresh and pretty tasty, and I appreciated that they prepared the fish without the skin like I prefer.
"But it's not worth going out of your way for. I didn't find the meal to be anything extraordinary and, for what it was, I think it was a bit overpriced."
Others on TripAdvisor, however, agreed with Rybka's hype, calling the restaurant a "delight", adding that "the batter and the fish were seasoned well, unlike other fish and chips I had in other places."
Another echoed the praises and said: "The food was amazing, best fish and chips we've had in ages. All in all and fab experience all round."
The Express has contacted Rybka for comments.
