Petrol and diesel owners can dramatically boost their fuel economy by pouring a common solution into their vehicles.

Crystal Voogd, an expert from motor finance specialists '5 Star Loans' warns using "energy conserving" oil could make a major difference.

They claim the oil contains important "friction-reducing additives" which can boost efficiency.

The simple tip could help motorists save valuable pennies at the pumps with the cost of fuel still high for road users.

Crystal said: "Opt for motor oils labelled as 'energy conserving'. These oils contain friction-reducing additives that improve fuel economy."

Engine oil is a crucial solution which plays a pivotal role in keeping components inside a vehicle lubricated.

This helps different parts to move without generating dangerous amounts of friction which could lead to damage.

Leading oil experts at Mobil have stressed that reducing the friction is vital to cutting back on fuel use.

Mobil commented: "The use of lower viscosity oils can help support efficiency and improve fuel economy by decreasing engine friction."

Earlier this month, the RAC claimed drivers are overpaying at the petrol pumps despite fuel falling.

The breakdown specialists and car insurance experts at the RAC stressed the average cost of a litre of unleaded dropped by 2.4p last month.

Costs now stand at 147.88p, down from 150.31p which should save road users around £1.30 per tank.

However, supermarket prices were down just 1.2p suggesting motorists should be receiving more discounts than they are currently getting.

Meanwhile, the RAC Fuel Watch comparison site stressed that petrol and diesel prices 'should fall".

The RAC has previously admitted the role that good quality motor oil could play in helping drivers cut back on fuel usage.

They explained: "Motor oil can also improve fuel economy, cool the engine, and reduce emissions.

"Depending on the type of oil your vehicle requires, you should consider its additives. Additives are chemicals that are added to the oil to improve its performance.

"Common additives include detergents, dispersants, and anti-wear agents. These additives can help keep your engine clean and running smoothly."
