A TikTok cleaning hack is impressing those in pursuit of sparkling kitchens after one user shared a simple method for achieving streak-free countertops-and it doesn't involve vinegar. According to the TikToker "Amateur Cleaner," switching out vinegar with one solution you're likely to already have in your home effectively cleans countertops to a tip-top shine.
Vinegar is an effective natural cleaner thanks to its acidic properties, which can break down grease, grime, and even some bacteria on kitchen surfaces. But despite its cleaning power, vinegar's strong, sour odour can linger in the air and on surfaces, making kitchens smell more like a pickling station than a fresh, clean space, forcing people to search for better alternatives.
In the short clip, the creator demonstrates her go-to method. She used a bit of washing up liquid and two cloths to get surfaces spotless and shining. She said: "How to get a streak-free counter: Use a damp cloth to remove the soap and immediately use a dry one."
She captioned the post: "This is so easy," and many viewers seem to agree. The method has racked up thousands of views and sparked interest among users tired of battling smear-prone surfaces.
Unlike vinegar, which is acidic and can leave dull streaks, especially on shiny or stone surfaces, washing up liquid works by breaking down oils and grime without etching or reacting with the countertop material. When used in moderation, it lifts away dirt and grease without leaving a film.
The key, the cleaner said, is using a damp cloth to wipe away the soap and then immediately following up with a dry one. This two-step process ensures no residue is left behind to dry unevenly, which is what typically causes those frustrating streaks.
Streaks often form when cleaning products are not fully removed or are allowed to dry in patches.
Minerals in tap water, lingering soap, or the chemical components in cleaners like vinegar can dry unevenly, leaving marks that are visible in natural or overhead light.
By physically removing the soap with a damp cloth and eliminating any moisture with a dry towel, you're ensuring a smooth, even finish.
Experts agree that one of the most effective ways to avoid streaks is by not overloading your cloth with product and ensuring the surface is properly dried. Microfiber cloths are especially good for this, as they absorb moisture quickly and leave no lint behind.
So while vinegar still has its place in many cleaning routines, this TikTok hack suggests that for streak-free kitchen counters, sometimes dish soap and a little manual effort are all you need.
