'Best ever' BBC drama with almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating leaves fans 'hooked'

It can be difficult to find a drama which ticks all of the boxes, but one BBC mini-series which aired in recent years is one to add to your list this autumn. The Nest, written by award-winning writer Nicole Taylor, landed on BBC One in 2020, and it left viewers "hooked". The five-part series sees two sides of Glasgow collide after a wealthy couple ask a struggling teenager called Kaya (played by Mirren Mack) to be their surrogate after years of trying to conceive. The thriller delves into the power imbalances between Kaya and her wealthy husband and wife, Dan (Martin Compston) and Emily (Sophie Rundall), as the show explores the moral and emotional issues around surrogacy and trust.

Martin, who rose to fame on the BBC police series, Line of Duty, was thrilled to star in The Nest and speak in his native Glaswegian accent. "The script had me hooked," Martin told The Standard. "I know the coast inside out and I'm very proud of it so I felt a strong relation to the story immediately."

While the show isn't currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer, fans can watch it on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

The Nest has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% by viewers, with one fan writing: "The plot is trickily twisty, the relationships are deeper than your typical Brit mystery, and it's a smart moral critique of the consequences of economic inequality. Plus it's like a trip to spectacular Scotland."

Another penned: "It all makes for a gripping exploration of a highly charged subject, the plot bubbling with danger as clues are dropped." Meanwhile, a third said: "I really enjoyed this drama, probably one of the best I've ever watched!!! It kept me on the edge of my seat every episode!"
