There is nothing quite like getting out of the bath or shower and enveloping yourself in a soft, fluffy towel. Yet even if you shell out on high-quality towels, over time they can become stiff and scratchy. Emily and Jonathan Attwood, founders of Bed and bath specialists scooms, explained that there are some simple ways you can return once-fluffy towels to their former glory.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the experts explained: "The best bath towels should envelop you in lovely soft fluffiness after your bath or shower.

"So, it can be hugely disappointing if your previously plush bath towel becomes stiff, limp or even scratchy. Don't despair, there are things you can try to make your towels soft again."

One of their most purse-friendly tricks might be hiding in your kitchen cupboard. Both baking soda and white vinegar are hailed for their multi-purpose uses around the home, and it's no exception when it comes to laundry.

Emily and Jonathan explained how using baking soda and white vinegar can help restore towels in certain situations.

In some cases, they explained that stiff or hard towels may be caused by a build-up of washing detergent or fabric softener clogging up the loops of cotton which make up towels. How much detergent and the type of fabric softener you use could play a role in how stiff your towels end up.

The experts explained: "Be careful only to use the recommended amount of detergent, or use less, as this can clog up your machine and towels. It can also result in bright white towels becoming slightly grey."

They also advise against using fabric softener, adding: "Fabric softeners can contain oils and other ingredients that actually reduce the absorbency of your towels. It can make your towels seem a bit greasy or slippery."

However, reaching for the baking soda or white vinegar could work wonders to turn back the clock on your towels.

Both products can help to reduce any product build-up coating your towels. "Adding baking soda to your towel wash helps remove soap and chemical residue that can end up covering your towels," said Emily and Jonathan.

"Add half a cup of baking soda with your washing detergent, then wash as usual. Baking soda will also naturally eliminate any musty odours that your towels may have acquired."

They continued: "Using white vinegar once every six weeks will remove any detergent and fabric softener residue that has built up. First, wash your towels on a normal wash with detergent. Then run a second wash cycle with one cup of white vinegar."

At the time of writing, you can purchase baking soda from Asda for 65p and Sainsbury's is currently selling vinegar for just 35p.
