Amethi : The block president attempted suicide late on Tuesday evening in the Congress Bhawan complex in Gauriganj, Amethi. He tried to hang himself by hanging himself from a tree. However, he was saved in time by Congress workers. Reports say that Block President Avnish Mishra Senani tried to take this step after being upset over the ticket not being finalized from Amethi yet. He is busy demanding Congress MP and former president Rahul Gandhi to contest elections from Amethi.
Earlier, due to lack of decision regarding the Congress candidate for Amethi Lok Sabha seat, the patience of Congress officials and workers has been exhausted. Amidst the ongoing confusion over the name of the claimant, workers staged a dharna at the Congress Bhawan on Tuesday evening. Congressmen are seen raising slogans of 'Amethi demand Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi'. The people protesting include Congress District President Pradeep Singhal, State General Secretary Yogendra Mishra and other Congressmen.
Some reports say that BJP candidate from Amethi Smriti Irani has filed her nomination on Monday. It is being speculated that a member of the Gandhi family will contest on this seat, but due to no announcement yet, the patience of the workers is now wearing thin. Voting will be held in Amethi in the 5th phase (20 May). Nominations for this started from 26th April and the last date for nomination is said to be 3rd May. Rahul Gandhi's name can be announced on this seat.
At the same time, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that Rahul Gandhi will contest the elections from Amethi only, but due to the name not being declared till now, the doubt is increasing. Amidst all this, every political development from Delhi to Amethi is being monitored. However, State Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey is going to visit Amethi on May 3. Congress leaders of Amethi claim that if Rahul Gandhi contests elections from Amethi this time, his victory is certain. In 2019, he had to face defeat against BJP leader Smriti Zubin Irani.
