Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary, which is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. On Thursday, PM Modi acknowledged the contributions of Major Dhyan Chand and highlighted the government's dedication to promoting sports across the nation.

In a message shared on social media, PM Modi stated, "Greetings on National Sports Day. Today, we pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. This day is a moment to appreciate all those who are passionate about sports and those who have represented India. Our government is fully committed to supporting sports and ensuring that more young people have the opportunity to play and excel."

National Sports Day is observed annually on August 29th in India to honor the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also paid floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand in New Delhi. Speaking at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, he emphasized the significance of the day, stating, "Today, on National Sports Day, we remember and honor Major Dhyan Chand. His legacy continues to inspire athletes and sports enthusiasts across the country."

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took a moment to remember Major Dhyan Chand, referring to him as the "face of Indian sports" and a source of pride for the nation. He added that National Sports Day serves as a reminder of Major Dhyan Chand's remarkable contributions to Indian hockey and as inspiration for future generations of athletes.

National Sports Day, established by the Indian government in 2012, aims to promote unity, encourage a healthy lifestyle, and inspire young people to engage in sports and physical activities.
