GooglePay rolling out Aadhaar-based authentication for UPI activation

Send Push

Google has made it possible for customers to create their UPI pin without a debit card thanks to the advent of Aadhaar-based authentication for UPI transactions. Aadhaar-based UPI support would be provided by the National Payments Corporation (NPCI).

Users who want to use UPI using Aadhaar must make sure their UIDAI-registered phone numbers and their bank's phone numbers are identical, and their bank account must be connected to Aadhaar.

How to set up Google Pay using Aadhaar: Users of Google Pay will now have the option to choose an Aadhaar-based UPI or a debit card when signing up. Users must provide the first six digits of their Aadhaar number to begin the Aadhaar-based onboarding procedure.

Users must enter the OTPs they have received from their bank and UIDAI to complete the authentication. The bank will then finish the procedure, at which point users can set their UPI pin.

After setting everything up, users may use Google Pay to make purchases and view their account balance. According to a press release from the firm, Google will not keep Aadhaar numbers and would only serve as a conduit for sending them to the NPCI for validation.

This functionality will support our efforts to increase the penetration of digital payments in India and is in line with the government's objective to promote financial inclusion. We have been encouraged over the years by the quick uptake of digital payments in the nation, and this functionality will help the UPI ecosystem grow even further, according to Sharath Bulusu, director of product management at Google. Over 99.9% of Indian adults have an Aadhaar number and utilise it at least once every month, as per UIDAI data.
