GUWAHATI: In a bid to enhance the financial security of government workers and their families, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma announced a new insurance policy on September 5. This significant move provides up to Rs 1 crore in coverage for state government employees.

Under the new policy, employees will receive comprehensive insurance benefits including Rs 10 lakh for life insurance, Rs 1 crore for personal accidental death, Rs 1 crore for total disability, and Rs 80 lakh for partial disability. This policy represents a major step in ensuring the welfare of state employees.

The announcement was made during a historic meeting of the Assam Cabinet. In addition to the insurance coverage, the Cabinet decided to implement several other measures, including offering a 20% bonus to Assam Tea Corporation Ltd employees and workers, extending a Rs 200 crore power subsidy to APDCL for economically weaker consumers, and establishing Assam's third Taj Hotel in Jagiroad. Amendments to the state's Startup and Industrial Policy were also approved.

To provide zero-premium insurance coverage, the Assam government plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India or any other scheduled commercial bank that manages the salary accounts of state employees. The insurance benefits will cover accidental death and permanent disability with Rs 1 crore each, partial disability with Rs 80 lakh, and death due to illness while in service with Rs 10 lakh. This coverage is in addition to the regular benefits available to state employees.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma also highlighted a landmark decision by the Assam Cabinet to accept 57 out of 67 recommendations from the Justice (retd) Biplab Sarma Commission. These recommendations are part of the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, marking a significant effort to safeguard the rights of Assam's residents.
