Whitley Bay incident: Funfair closed after person 'seriously injured' on ride

A funfair has been shut after emergency services rushed to the site following reports a person became "seriously injured" at a ride.

Ambulances rushed to the Spanish City Summer Funfair in Whitley Bay shortly before 2.15pm on Saturday afternoon. The funfair was busy with families for the bank holiday weekend but the site was closed until further notice, following the incident. The Great North Air Ambulance Service landed on the grass next to the funfair and quickly rushed to help the injured person.

Crews from The North East Ambulance Service also attended the scene and an off duty medic also helped the fairgoer, according to ChronicleLive.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 2:13pm this afternoon to reports of a person seriously injured at a funfair ride near Spanish City at Whitley Bay.

"We dispatched a rapid response paramedic, a clinical team leader, an emergency ambulance crew and the air ambulance.

"An off duty medic was also supporting the patient. We are still currently on scene (3:09pm)."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 2.15pm today (Saturday), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man at Spanish City Summer Funfair in the Spanish City Plaza area of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside.

"Emergency services are currently on scene. The fair has been closed to the public and will remain closed until further notice."

In an online statement, a spokesperson for North Tyneside Council said: "The Spanish City funfair at Whitley Bay is closed. This is due to an emergency incident. Further updates will come from Northumbria Police."
