A big name doesn’t always mean better taste. In this case, a supermarket's own-branded cheese proved to have a better taste than the iconic . In a blind taste, the panel ranked the best cheeses based on their aroma, appearance, texture and, most importantly, flavour.
Cheddar is nutritious in moderation. It has high protein, and it’s a good source of minerals, such as iodine and phosphorus, as well as vitamins B2, B5 and B12. On the other hand, it’s also high in saturated fat and salt. Therefore, it’s recommended to consume it in moderation.

The tasters tried a selection of supermarket-own brand mature cheddar cheese from , , Sainsbury’s, as well as big branded names. Tesco’s Finest Mature English Cheddar Cheese was announced as the winner, reported.
The cheese was praised for its firm and smooth texture, with a total score of 78% in satisfaction. Shoppers can get their hand of the delicious cheese in any Tesco supermarket, costing £3.80 for 350g.
The site said: “Our testers loved the look of this cheese and highly rated its first, smooth texture. Most also thought its salt level and strength of flavour were just right. People found it pleasingly crumbly and creamy, too.”

The second place was Cornish Cove Mature Cheddar Cheese, which was described as a “good all-rounded” by the panel, scoring 73%. It’s currently priced at £4.25 for 350g. “The majority of our tastes said the salt level was right, and they were also impressed by the smooth, firm texture,” it explained. “Its flavour and crumbliness satisfied most tasters, too.”
Aldi’s Specially Selected West Country Mature Cheddar was found to be the cheapest on the list, costing £2.99 for 350g. However, its taste was described to be “bland” with many of the tasters not liking the texture of the cheese.
Surprisingly, the well-known brand Cathedral City didn’t get to the top spots, receiving a total score of 70%. Despite being one of the cheapest brands (and the winner), the tasters weren’t satisfied with the flavour. Shoppers can get their hands on Cathedral City Our Mature Cheddar cheese in any UK supermarket, costing £3.50 for 350g.
