Man offered 'skeleton crew' job where you work in darkness – there's one big perk

Send Push

A man has been offered a role as part of a "skeleton crew" on a station very few people have seen.

Revealing more people had successfully climbed Mount Everest than had been at the base, Leroy says he is tempted by the remote job as it would be an experience to tell his future grandchildren.

Taking to /X under the handle @deadbeatregular, he revealed the role would see him jet off to the lowest point of the and work in near isolation for eight months.

Not only would he be around little, if any people at all, it would be in "complete darkness" for six of the eight months. Despite that, he seems tempted by the job because of the lush included.

An original post from October 23 saw Leroy ask his followers: "Should I apply to work a construction/maintenance job in Antarctica? I'm looking at the indeed listing now lol."

Two days after his initial query and Leroy has his answer. He added: "Ok so I just got off the phone with the recruiter. Its an over-winter contract at the actual south pole station. Skeleton crew of 42 people for 8 months feb-October. 6 months total darkness. More people have climbed Everest than have done this."

An almost unanimous reception to the job listing was seen in the replies, with everyone telling Leroy to take the job and think of the wild memories he could make during his eight-month stint in the middle of nowhere. One user wrote: "like not even joking if you're qualified and don't have dependents, DO IT."

Another added: "High key if you can endure no sunlight I'd so go for it. I skimmed the thread and saw $2k a week with food+lodging+gear taken care of, so you can bank that and come back to society with a nice bit of cash and bragging rights. I'm assuming it's a contract so you can't quit midway through and leave without difficulties?"

A third wrote: "You’d be foolish not to, it’s a story you can tell for ever and a personal test of endurance." Leroy also revealed it was "2k a week plus lodging, food, and extreme cold gear."

But one user said it would be rather difficult to leave Antarctica during its darker months as no flights can be made in or out. They replied: "If I remember it right from something I read elsewhere, once darkness sets in there are no flights back out, so even if you broke out of your contract, you wouldn't be able to leave at all."

Initial poster Leroy likened the experience to horror film The Thing, where a group of scientists must survive a shape-shifting monster which was thawed out of an ice block.

Despite this fear, one person revealed their brother-in-law had been on a similar shift at a south pole base and loved the experience. They wrote: "My brother-in-law did this twice, and he absolutely loved it. It’s a very unique experience."
