'I absolutely love this dress but people say I can't wear it to my friend's wedding'

Wedding season is officially upon us and with it comes the pressure of finding the perfect outfit for the occasion, the venue, the weather – and getting the bride’s approval.

After receiving an invitation to attend a ceremony in Italy, but unsure if her first choice was suitable, a woman shared her dress choice on social media looking for advice.

Posting to Reddit's r/WeddingAttireApproval forum, she added several photos of a long, pale lilac dress that featured spaghetti straps and a corseted back. However, it quickly became apparent that she was right to ask for guidance as many people had strong thoughts on the gorgeous gown from House of CB.

Next to the images, she wrote: "I think I’m worried because it’s quite light in colour and maybe the corset detail is too much? I just absolutely love the dress. Is it appropriate for a wedding in Italy?

“The wedding venue is beside a lake in Italy and it’s my boyfriend's sister [who is] getting married, it’s her third wedding, his family is fairly laid back, not religious etc but I wouldn’t say I know them well enough to predict what they’ll all be wearing/ok with.”

Many readers suggested it wasn’t suitable if there was even a hint of religion to the proceedings, remarking that the dress showed too much skin. One person replied: “I think it depends on the venue and what's acceptable boobage-wise. Vineyard, is probably fine. Traditional Catholic mass, not so much.”

Another person replied: “Can confirm that this dress is much more sheer in person - my sister ordered it for a wedding but the bride asked her not to wear it because it was too much and also did look much lighter in person (plus the cleavage was quite jarring in real life).”

And someone else blasted: “The dress looks cheap and tacky and way way too much chest showing. So inappropriate.”

Others suggested there were ways she could wear the dress if she were careful, with another comment reading: "I would be wary, I think this dress is much more sheer than it looks in these specific photos. If that doesn’t bother you, then just throw a shawl over your shoulder for the mass and werk it for the after party! It is beautiful."
