Former captain has warned the that it'd be 'selfish' to offer the ODI captaincy. With fellow star set to be named captain of the T20 side, reports say that it's between Stokes and Brook for the ODI role.
The two vacancies have opened up after stepped down from his role as in February. Stokes, 33, hasn't played limited-overs for England since 2023 but following the appointment of head coach - who he already works alongside for the Test team - after first retiring in 2022.
And the Durham all-rounder is said to be England cricket managing director first choice for the ODI captaincy. Vaughan, however, believes that Stokes needs to be protected from himself, adding that it'd be 'absolute nonsense' for him to play white-ball cricket for England again.
The 33-year-old has a chequered injury record and is currently recovering from hamstring surgery. Any return to white-ball cricket would increase Stokes' workload ahead of a hotly-anticipated Test series at home to followed by the Ashes in .
"It's an absolute nonsense to think that Ben Stokes is going to play white-ball cricket," Vaughan, who captained England's Ashes-winning side in 2005, claimed. "He gives absolutely everything, not just when he's playing for England but when he's training. He is all or nothing.

"In a way, I think it's quite selfish to even consider him because he will say yes because he is Ben Stokes. He will do whatever England ask him to do. Just don't ask him and let him be."
Vaughan was speaking at the annual Cowdrey Lecture hosted by MCC at Lord's on Thursday, shortly after the news had been broken by . "Let him get the Ashes urn in his hands," he added.
"It's not just about this India series or the Ashes series, I want to see him leading the home Ashes in 2027, I want him to get England to a World Test Championship final.
"Why put the burden on him to play white-ball cricket? It's not about putting pressure on him because he deals with pressure better than anybody, but just let him look after his body and get him playing Test cricket for as long as possible."

Vaughan also questioned why Brook would be named captain of the T20 side and not the ODI team when the next 50-over World Cup isn't until 2027. "Harry Brook will be the T20 captain, I think that's being announced soon and that's what we're expecting," he said.
"So the next T20 World Cup is in a year - if you're saying that Harry Brook is good enough to be the captain in that format with that tournament coming so soon, surely he's good enough to be 50-over captain for that World Cup in 2027?"
Key revealed last month that Stokes was under consideration. "Nothing is off the table," the ECB chief confirmed. You look at every single option and think, 'What is the best thing to do?’ Ben Stokes is one of the best captains I've ever seen. It would be stupid not to look at him.
"He is an unbelievably good tactician, which we've seen in Test cricket, but he's also a leader of men. He is someone who gets the best out of people. When the pressure is really on, he is able to sort of throw a blanket around the players and say, 'No, this is the way forward. Keep going with it'.
"What would that mean for his workload? There's always a way in England where you start thinking, 'What if it goes wrong?' You've also got to think, 'What if it goes right?' And they are the decisions that I have to make."
