Soon travellers will be able to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun in just 20 minutes thanks to a state-of-the-art ropeway! Also known as Mussoorie Sky Car , this will be the longest passenger ropeway in South Asia. This new ropeway will change travel between the two hill destinations.
Here are five things to know about this groundbreaking project:
From hours to minutes: A game-changer in travel time
The road journey from Dehradun to Mussoorie spans about 34 km and typically takes 90 minutes or more, especially with tourist traffic. There are no direct train services connecting the two locations, making road travel the only viable option. The upcoming ropeway changes all that. With a 5.2-kilometer mono-cable detachable gondola system, the ride will take just 20 minutes.
A scenic ride
More than just a transportation option, the ropeway offers an elevated travel experience. The cable car will cover 5.2 kilometers and rise nearly 1,000 meters in elevation, offering stunning panoramic views of the Shivalik range, deep forested valleys, and misty mountain trails. Unveiled at INTERALPIN 2023 in Innsbruck, Austria, the project is backed by a Rs 300 crore investment and is expected to provide a luxurious yet nature-immersive journey.
A step towards sustainable tourism
One of the standout features of this project is its commitment to environmental sustainability. Fully electrically powered, the ropeway will function throughout the year, reducing the need for fuel-based vehicles in the sensitive hill ecosystem. With fewer cars on the winding roads, it will contribute significantly to lowering carbon emissions and minimising the strain on mountain roads that suffer from overuse and landslides.
Safety, technology, and local empowerment
The Mussoorie Sky Car is being built to European safety standards (CEN). The gondolas will feature automatic doors, weather-proof design, and comfortable seating for 10 passengers per cabin. With a capacity to transport up to 1,300 people per hour in each direction, it’s designed for high efficiency during peak seasons. Components of the system will be produced in India, encouraging local manufacturing and job creation. The collaboration includes FIL Industries, SRM Engineering, and POMA SAS, a leading French ropeway technology provider.
Coming Soon by 2026
Set to open in September 2026, this ropeway isn’t just a transportation project—it’s poised to become a major tourist attraction in its own right. Imagine soaring above tree canopies and hilltops, gliding through clouds, and bypassing all road traffic in just 20 minutes.
Whether you're a daily commuter or a traveler looking for something unique, the Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway promises an unforgettable experience!
