A Special Investigation Team ( SIT) probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg has uncovered a significant financial transaction of around Rs 1 crore in the bank accounts of two of his personal security officers (PSOs). The discovery comes as one of the eight individuals who were on the yacht in Singapore when Garg passed away has contacted the Assam Police to cooperate with the investigation.
A source involved in the probe was quoted by ToI as saying, “The financial transaction is examined thoroughly.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the state government has requested the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax department to examine the financial aspects of the case. “I hope the central agencies will take cognisance of it,” he said.
Zubeen Garg had died while swimming off the coast of Singapore on September 19. Speaking to the media, CM Sarma provided an update on the cooperation of witnesses. “Rupkamal Kalita has informed the police that he will come to Guwahati on Tuesday. He has informed the CID over the phone on Monday. However, the seven others have not said anything about coming to Assam to help in the investigation. We will maintain pressure on them... the sooner they come, we can finish the investigation. We will motivate them to cooperate with us,” the CM said.
He added that some individuals are hesitant to travel to Assam, citing various reasons. “But at least one person has decided to come. We believe that if one comes, the others will also follow,” Sarma said.
Regarding the investigation in Singapore, the CM clarified that Assam Police would not need to go there. “Whatever evidence the Singapore Police gathers will be shared with us under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). Our request has already been sent to Singapore, but no foreign country will allow the police of another country to investigate on their soil,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the SIT, which has already arrested North East India festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta, continued recording statements on Monday. Among those questioned were Zubeen’s cousin brother Rituprayag Garg, caretaker of his studio at Jonali Abhimanyu Tanti, domestic help Sadhan Nath, and two female singers connected to the case.
