In a bid to save adolescents from porn addiction, the Spanish government has taken some stringent steps in regulating viewership of adult content online. The government is all set to launch an app that will prevent children's access to R-rated digital content.
Referred to as the ‘ porn passport,’ this application allows adults to access pornographic content anonymously while ensuring that minors are blocked from viewing it.
According to Olive Press, the 'porn passport' is an initiative within the Spanish government's new Digital Wallet app, officially named the Digital Wallet Beta (Cartera Digital Beta). This app will enable internet platforms to verify if someone viewing pornography is of legal age. Beginning later this summer, users will need to confirm their age through the app. Once verified, they will be granted 30 "porn credits," allowing them to access explicit content for a month.
How Do These Tokens Work?
According to News Byte, each credit issued by the app will generate a QR code. When a user enters the address of a porn site, a link will appear that, when clicked, connects to the Digital Wallet. The wallet will present a credential to verify the user’s age without revealing any other personal information. One token allows the user to visit the same website 10 times before it is depleted.
A government-issued ID will be used to verify a user's age. There is no limit on the number of tokens that can be generated each month; users can renew their tokens or porn credits as often as they like. However, once all tokens are used up, users will receive alerts to renew their digital passport. Frequent access to websites increases the risk of being traced. Despite criticism for its complexity, the Spanish government asserts that the system is more privacy-friendly and ensures users' details are not tracked.
