President Murmu gives nod to Women's Reservation Bill

The recently passed women's reservation bill has received President Droupadi Murmu's nod, a notification issued by law ministry said on Friday. The President gave her assent to the said bill on Thursday, it said. The bill is aimed to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

It will now be officially called as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act.

"It shall come into force on such date as the central government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint," the provision reads.

The Bill was passed by both houses of the Parliament during the Special Parliament Session with 214 members voting in support and none against in the upper house. The embers welcomed the passing of the Bill with thumping of desks. BJP members raised slogans hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and greeted him.

Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 454 members voting in favour of the legislation and two against it.

The bill was officially introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996 by the UPA government. Since the last 27 years, the bill had been waiting to get approved by the Parliament.

The 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' is the first bill passed by Parliament after it shifted to the new Parliament building on Tuesday. PM Modi had announced the government's intention to bring it on Monday.
