Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, and will lead the side in the three-match series in Australia starting October 19.
Rohit, 38, has been included in the squad as a batter, along with Virat Kohli, marking their return to the Indian ODI side for the first time since the Champions Trophy in March.
The selection panel, chaired by former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, met on Saturday in Ahmedabad, where India are currently playing the first Test of the series against West Indies. Gill, 26, had taken over as India’s Test captain earlier this year and was appointed vice-captain of the T20I team during the 2025 Asia Cup.
With the ODI captaincy, he now holds formal leadership responsibilities across all three formats.

Rohit had been India’s full-time ODI captain since December 2021. During his tenure, he led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one tie and one no-result. He guided India to Asia Cup titles in 2018 (as stand-in captain) and 2023, reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, and capped his captaincy by winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in March.
During his career, he has played some of the longest and most memorable innings in the format, leaving bowlers helpless and fans in awe. Rohit Sharma continues to be the only player in cricket history to have scored three double centuries in ODIs, a record that would never fade from his career album.
'Hitman' announced his arrival as an Indian ODI giant with a 158-ball marathon scoring 209 against Australia in 2013. In just the next year, Rohit Sharma decimated Sri Lanka, facing 173 balls and smashing 33 fours and 9 sixes, to put up a score of 264 runs on the board. But the hitman's spree did not stop there. Leading the Indian ODI team as captain against Sri Lanka in 2017, Rohit Sharma stood unbeaten 208 off 153 balls, showing his ability to pace an innings to perfection.
