Prabodhini Ekadashi: Significance
Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Dev Uthaan Ekadashi, Prabodhini Ekadashi, or Guruvayur Ekadashi in South India, is a time of great spiritual awakening. It marks the end of Chaturmas, a four-month period during which Lord Vishnu is believed to enter a state of deep slumber, known as Dev Shayani Ekadashi. During this time, all auspicious activities, like weddings and new ventures, are avoided.
With Lord Vishnu awakening on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the period of inactivity ends, and all auspicious events are once again permitted. This makes it an ideal day for important religious and personal milestones, such as marriages, engagements, and home ceremonies.
On this day, temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna are beautifully decorated with flowers and lights. Devotees visit these temples to offer prayers, perform deep daan (charitable giving), and light 11 diyas (lamps) near the sacred Tulsi plant.
