After a wet weekend that marked the official onset of the monsoon in Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain and a generally cloudy sky for Monday.
A yellow alert is in place for the day, with the IMD predicting the maximum and minimum temperatures to settle around 32°C and 26°C, respectively.
In its latest advisory, the IMD said the national capital is likely to witness more rain on Monday, though the intensity is expected to remain moderate.
A yellow alert, the second-lowest on the IMD’s four-tier weather warning scale, urges residents to "be aware" of potential weather-related disruptions.
Monsoon reaches Delhi, covers entire country ahead of time
The capital officially entered the monsoon season on Sunday, two days later than the normal date of June 27. The IMD confirmed that the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire country, nine days earlier than usual, completing its advance by June 29.
"The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, and has covered the entire Delhi region on June 29. Thus, the monsoon has now covered the entire country, ahead of its usual schedule," the IMD said in a statement.
This is the fastest nationwide monsoon coverage since 2020, when it completed its sweep by June 26.
Delhi saw intermittent rainfall through Sunday, leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls in several areas. IMD’s Safdarjung observatory recorded 4.8 mm of rain by 5:30 pm, while Palam logged 10.2 mm, Lodhi Road 5.3 mm, and Aya Nagar 9.9 mm.
Delhi's air quality comes within 'satisfactory' range
Delhi Traffic Police reported congestion at key junctions including India Gate, ITO, Peeragarhi Chowk, Shankar Road, and Sarai Rohilla. Additional personnel were deployed to manage the situation. Traffic jams were also reported along the Delhi-Gurugram stretch of NH-8.
While the NDMC received only two minor waterlogging complaints in its jurisdiction, the PWD reported 10–12 such instances, most of which were resolved quickly.
On Sunday, the city's maximum temperature dipped to 32.8°C, 4.4 degrees below the seasonal average, offering relief from the preceding heat.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category, with a 24-hour average AQI of 83, as per the Central Pollution Control Board.
