Amar Singh Chamkila is again the talk of the town. Imtiaz Ali’s film on the incredible life and the short, yet spectacular career of the late minstrel of Punjab has emerged as a bona-fide success on Netflix. The performances of the cast - Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti have been praised unanimously by critics. However, the movie’s success has brought about the rather colourful personal life of the singer (who in his lifetime was a rather polarised figure), especially his two marriages.

For those who aren’t aware, Chamkila married twice. He was married to a woman named Gurmail when he met and fell in love with his singing partner Amarjot.

In an interview with the YouTube channel Love Punjab, Gurmail opened up about her equation with her late husband’s second wife. She revealed that she had met the singer a few times and they would prepare meals together. She also revealed that she made an effort to get to know Amarjot for Chamkila’s sake.

“Chamkila would visit alone and not bring Amarjot along. But she did visit me sometimes. I would make rotis, she would make the vegetables,” she said, adding that she didn’t know how to make rotis. “She didn’t know how to make rotis, they had a cook. I would respect her because of Amar Singh Chamkila,” she said.

Gurmail revealed the family went through a financial doldrum after the singer’s death. “The light of our house died. We had no one to financially support us. The children were small, where could I have gone? The money that he earned, we didn’t get any money because of the court cases that opened after his death. Cases went on for 15 years,” she revealed.

Despite marrying Amarjot, Chamkila didn’t divorce his first wife, and continued to financially support her and her children.

Chamkila’s Secretary Reveals Horrific Details

The late singer’s secretary Manku revealed how Chamkila’s killers performed a bhangra after he was shot and left a letter on his chest, which got drenched in blood.

“The shooters were among the crowd. They could have shot him on the way. They could have shot him after he’d stepped onto the stage. Who knows, even I might have been shot if they’d fired at the stage. But they waited. Chamkila grandly arrived in his car, it was a scene straight out of a movie. I said, ‘Put your hands together, Chamkila is here’.’ No sooner than I’d said this, I heard loud bangs,” he told Cine Punjabi.

Chamkila and Amarjot were gunned down by a bunch of unnamed assailants on March 8, 1988. They were battered with bullets after they exited their car to perform for a concert in Mehsampur, Punjab.

Although Khalistani separatists have been suspected, ultimately the crime could not be brought home to anybody, and Chamkila’s murder remains unsolved.
