Air India said on Tuesday it would partially restore its international flight schedule that was scaled back following the accident involving flight AI171 on June 12.
As part of the restoration, Air India will resume its thrice-weekly service between Ahmedabad and London Heathrow from August 1 to September 30, replacing the currently operating five-times-a-week flights between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick.
The Tata-owned airline had reduced flights to Europe and North America by 15% till mid-July to increase contingency aircraft to cater for cancellations.
Most of the cancelled flights were operated by Boeing 787 aircraft and were grounded due to enhanced inspections mandated by the DGCA. The disruption was further compounded by the closure of Iranian airspace, forcing longer flight diversions. Additionally, night curfews at European airports and pilots exceeding their permitted duty hours caused delays on the return legs.
“Given the compounding circumstances that Air India is facing, to ensure stability of our operations, better efficiency and to minimise inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce its international services on wide body aircraft by 15% for the next few weeks,” the airline had said in June.
Air India has a fleet of 33 787 aircraft, the oldest of which was acquired in 2012. The plane that went down in Ahmedabad killing 241 on board and 30 on the ground, entered service in 2014.
