Wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel, one of the surprise performers of IPL 2025, opened up about receiving offers from both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on the very same day. Urvil revealed how he had to make a tough decision that eventually saw him don the yellow jersey.
Urvil entered the IPL 2025 auction with a base price of INR 30 lakhs but went unsold despite a terrific run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he smashed two centuries, including a 28-ball hundred, the fastest T20 ton by an Indian. Previously part of the Gujarat Titans in 2023 (without making a playing appearance), the right-handed batter was on the sidelines again after the mega auction.
However, midway through IPL 2025, CSK’s Vansh Bedi was ruled out due to injury, leading to CSK signing Patel for the remained of the season. Coincidentally, RCB also approached the cricketer as a potential replacement for the injured Devdutt Padikkal.
"When I came to know about it, I was very excited because I remember there were two good news for me on the same day. I first got a call from RCB that Devdutt Padikkal might have been injured. So, they were looking for a replacement. So, they called me first, but they didn’t confirm whether they would pick me. They asked me to come for a 15-day trial,” he said on the Game Changers Podcast's YouTube channel.
I wanted my father to meet Mahi bhai: UrvilHowever, just an hour later, CSK's analyst and scout AR Srikkanth reached out to Urvil with a more concrete proposal.
"After one hour, I got a call from CSK. Srikanth Sir from scouting called me and said they are considering me as a replacement player. So, be ready. So, I was confused. I said, ‘Sir, RCB also called me.’ He said they were sure about my inclusion in the team. He told me to be ready and wait for BCCI’s approval. It was a very good moment for me. I remember we were on vacation, so the family was together. I remember the call was around 1 pm, and I told the family in the evening that it’s clear that I am going to CSK," he added.
Though CSK didn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2025 and finished at the bottom of the table, Urvil’s performance grabbed significant attention. He featured in three games and scored 68 runs at a strike rate of 212.5, helping CSK win two of those matches.
Notably, he convinced his father to attend an IPL game not just to see his son play, but to meet the legendary skipper MS Dhoni.
“My parents hesitate to watch me play. I told my father that whether you watch the game or not, I want you to meet Mahi bhai. My father then especially came to watch the match because of him," he further added.
