Tahawwur Rana, a key figure in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday night, shortly after being brought back to India from a US prison. The NIA secured an 18-day custody of Tahawwur Rana, following a court session in which the agency requested 20 days for detailed questioning. This custody will allow the NIA to delve into his role in the horrific attacks that claimed over 160 lives, including six Americans. Tahawwur Rana’s interrogation is set to focus on his connection with the terror plot, his association with the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and the involvement of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI.
The investigation into Tahawwur Rana’s role in the planning of the 2008 Mumbai attacks is intensifying, with a special 12-member team from the NIA, led by DG Sadanand Date, tasked with questioning him. Tahawwur Rana’s links to David Headley, another key figure in the plot, will be under scrutiny. Intercepted communications between Tahawwur Rana and Headley have provided crucial evidence. In one conversation, Tahawwur Rana suggested that the Lashkar terrorists who carried out the attacks should be awarded Pakistan’s highest gallantry honors. This revelation, cited in documents from the U.S. Department of Justice, will form a central part of the ongoing investigation.
The NIA’s focus is not only on Tahawwur Rana’s direct involvement in the attacks but also on his connections to the terror network and his role in facilitating the operation. Surveillance during his detention is stringent, with Tahawwur Rana placed in a tightly monitored cell at the NIA headquarters. His lockup, measuring 10 by 10 feet, is devoid of any ventilation or windows, and he is under constant CCTV surveillance. Special precautions have been taken to prevent any potential self-harm. Daily essentials, including food, are arranged by the authorities to ensure his wellbeing during the detention period.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is closely monitoring the progress of the interrogation and will be provided with regular updates on the investigation’s developments. The NIA’s interrogation will likely reveal more about Tahawwur Rana’s ties to key players in the terrorist plot, particularly those connected to the planning and execution of the tragic attacks that shook the nation and the world.
