Apple has begun rolling out the beta version of its iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1, introducing the initial phase of its Apple Intelligence features. This latest beta release, ahead of its official September launch, includes a host of new AI-driven capabilities that were initially showcased at WWDC 2024. The update promises enhancements such as an improved Siri, automatic email and image generation, and advanced notification management.
Currently, the beta is exclusively available to registered Apple developers and requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max to install. Even after the official release of Apple Intelligence features, these models will remain the only ones supported.
To access the iOS 18.1 beta, users must first update their device to the iOS 18 beta version and then register for a waitlist within the Apple Settings app. It is advised to create a fresh backup of your device before proceeding with the beta installation to ensure that you can revert to a previous version if necessary.
Once the iOS 18.1 beta is installed, users can find the new Apple Intelligence features under the “Apple Intelligence & Siri” section in Settings, located just below Accessibility. However, it may take some time for all the features to become fully operational on your device.
The current beta version introduces several key features, including new writing tools that allow users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various applications such as Mail, Notes, and Pages. The Mail app has also been upgraded with a Smart Reply function that suggests quick responses. Additionally, Siri has received a major redesign, featuring glowing edge lights and the capability to switch between text and voice interactions. Another notable addition is the “Reduce Interruption” feature, which filters notifications to display only those requiring immediate attention, such as important messages.
However, some anticipated features, including image generation, Genmoji, ChatGPT integration, and priority notifications, are not yet available in this initial beta release. Apple appears to be delaying the full rollout of these features to ensure a smoother launch and to address any issues that arise during the beta phase. The company is expected to release additional AI features in subsequent updates, with the broader public launch likely occurring a few months after the initial beta release.
Overall, this beta version marks the first glimpse of Apple’s ambitious foray into AI, with a promise of more comprehensive updates in the near future.
