Diwali 2024: Appeal to create a pollution-free Diwali, Go Green Diwali

Send Push

Diwali, along with our rich cultural traditions, is a time when we also understand our responsibilities towards caring for the environment. As the winter season approaches, so does the festival of Diwali—a time of joy, warmth, and festivities. However, rising pollution levels in India have become a matter of serious concern, leading to several states such as Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi taking steps. This year, seven states have completely banned conventional firecrackers and only “green crackers” are allowed. The ban will be in effect till January 1, 2025, and limits the use of firecrackers to between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali night.

These measures reflect the growing awareness of the need for clean air and a healthy environment and underline the importance of celebrating sustainably. Green crackers, free from harmful chemicals like barium and lead, are now the only type of crackers that are permitted, making this a watershed moment for celebrating this festival in an eco-conscious way.

Let’s look at seven effective ways to celebrate Diwali that incorporate our cultural heritage as well as our responsibility towards our planet:

Choose eco-friendly crackers: With the ban on conventional crackers, green crackers are the best option. These eco-friendly options emit 30% fewer particles and are free from harmful chemicals, thereby reducing air pollution.

Adopt natural and organic decorations: Decorate your home with earthen diyas, fresh flowers, and paper or bamboo decorations. These organic options not only make your home look beautiful but also cause less harm to the environment.

Use energy-efficient lighting: Use LED or solar-powered lights to light up your festivities. These use very little energy and help reduce carbon emissions.

Choose sustainable and thoughtful gifts: This Diwali, prioritize sustainability in gift giving. Opt for potted plants, handmade crafts, or local products.

Eco-conscious cleaning: Reduce waste and save water during Diwali cleaning. Use organic cleaners and segregate waste.

Reduce carbon emissions: Try carpooling or using public transport for transportation. Also, buy ingredients from a local farmer’s market and make Diwali delicacies.

Spread awareness and inspire a green Diwali movement: Talk with your friends, family, and community about celebrating Diwali sustainably. This will increase the impact of the sustainable choices you make.

This Diwali, let us all come together and take steps towards celebrating a green festival that not only honors our culture but also takes care of our environment.
