Why Marc Guehi is not playing in England vs Switzerland Euro 2024 quarter-final

Marc Guehi misses England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland as the Crystal Palace centre-back serves a one-game suspension.

Guehi, 23, has played every minute of all four matches at the tournament in Germany, one of only three outfield players (Declan Rice, John Stones and Kyle Walker, plus Jordan Pickford) to do so.

Including the two pre-tournament warm-up games earlier this summer, which Guehi started, England have not begun a match without him since March. But that will be the case for the Switzerland match because the defender has become the first England player to incur a suspension during the tournament.

Guehi is out after receiving two yellow cards across the first four matches. The first came midway through the second half of the final group-stage game against Slovenia for pulling the shirt of Andraz Sporar after a moment of confusion with centre-back partner Stones. His second them came three minutes into the last 16 match versus Slovakia as Guehi made amends following a poor back-pass from Kieran Trippier by up-ending David Strelec.

Uefa regulations state that two cautions lead to a one-match ban and do not expire until after the quarter-finals. That means Conor Gallagher, Jude Bellingham, Kobbie Mainoo, Phil Foden and Trippier would miss a potential semi-final by being booked against Switzerland.

Bellingham can play in the quarter-final after a Uefa investigation into a lewd gesture only resulted in a suspended one-match ban and a £25,400 fine after Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body found him guilty of “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. But after being booked in the 17th minute of the last 16 tie, the 21-year-old would miss any semi-final England reaches by receiving another caution against Switzerland, or potentially if they enforce the suspended ban for any other violation that may occur.
