US Secret Service probes Elon Musk's tweet about Kamala Harris and Joe Biden assassination

An X post sent by Elon Musk suggesting it was “odd” no attempts had been made on the lives of President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris is under investigation by agents.

Last weekend, disgraced ex-commander and chief Donald Trump was grabbed by the Secret Service when a number of gunshots were made in an alleged assassination attempt. The Republican nominee was taken to safety after the incident on his golf course in Florida.

The gunman was the second to attack Trump in as many months, after his ear was hurt in July. In the wake of the attack, an X user asked why someone would want to take out Trump.

In response, Elon Musk wrote in a now-deleted post: “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala?”. It received wide condemnation before Musk took it down, but was seen by tens of millions of people.

Nate Herring, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, told Bloomberg : “[The agency] “is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk. As a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence. We can say, however, the Secret Service investigates all threats related to our protectees.”

This week, Trump said about the second attempt on his life he and friend Steve Witkoff "heard shots being fired in the air, I guess probably four or five" as Secret Service agents on the course's next hole spotted the rifle and fired at the suspect. Speaking as part of a social media event hosted by X, he said: "I was playing golf with some of my friends on a Sunday morning and very peaceful, very beautiful weather … and all of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air, and I guess probably four or five, and it sounded like bullets."

Praising the Secret Service for doing an "excellent job", he added: "There was no question that we were off that course. I would have loved to have sank that last putt, but we decided [to] get out of [there]."

Ryan Routh, 58, is facing federal gun charges after a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle poking through the bushes and opened fire on the suspect. They confirmed the only shots fired in the incident were by its agent.

Routh is alleged to have spent around 12 hours around the golf course in West Palm Beach before being spotted by the agent walking ahead of Trump.
