In a wild tirade, former president Donald Trump has blasted classified documents prosecutor Jack Smith as a "f**king a**hole" during a speech where he likened himself to notorious gangster Al Capone.

Trump, visibly irate, claimed he had been "indicted like Alphonse" and unleashed a verbal onslaught against Smith during a high-ticket fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, with guests paying £30,000 each to attend. He also took a swipe at Fulton County DA Fani Willis, referring to her as a "real beauty" in front of the 400-strong crowd.

During the 90-minute address, the ex-POTUS furiously accused Democrats of having "rigged the election". Trump is currently embroiled in legal battles, facing 88 criminal charges across four different state and federal cases.

While berating prosecutor Smith, Trump didn't hold back on compliments for House speaker Mike Johnson, telling GOP detractors to "leave him alone". This mix of insults and commendations came after the initial week of Trump's trial over hush money payments.

The speech also included quips about his daughter-in-law Lara, with Trump joking that she might have reconsidered marrying into the family had she known about the indictments. "Once I got indicted, I said holy s***, I just got indicted. Me, I got indicted," he remarked.

"In fact, Lara, if she knew I got indicted, she probably wouldn't have joined the family."

His self-comparison to Al Capone emerged after Willis had to let go of special prosecutor Nathan Wade due to a conflict of interest. Trump declared: "I got indicted like Alphonse and like all these people."

Trump later outlined the ideal qualities a new vice-president would have should he win a second term, as he aims to win the Republican primary. He said: "It's funny when I listen to the fake news, they all say, 'Well, you know, he's going to have a hard time getting people in his administration because he's very tough and I'm not sure he can get anybody to be vice president of the United States."

He added: "I've got 50 people calling me, begging me 'I'll cut off my right arm, sir. Please, I want to be the vice president. These are ambitious politicians."

Trump also praised a handful of current Republican senators including "incredible" JD Vance and "talented guy" Marco Rubio.

The former president was keen to makeup ground on Saturday, telling his audience: "Anyone who makes a $1 million donation right now to the Republican Party, I will let you come up and speak."

Two donors came onto the stage after paying up and said: "Donald J Trump is the person that God has chosen."
