The Diplomat season two has landed on Netflix in full so what happens in the conclusion of the latest outing of the hit political drama?

Actress Keri Russell is back as US ambassador to the UK Kate Wyler and she’s been busy investigating who ordered the bombing of HM Courageous at the end of series one.

After a lot of digging and unexpected twists, she eventually found her answer and it wasn’t the one anyone was expecting.

The Diplomat season 2 ending explained

It had been strongly hinted at since the first season that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (played by Rory Kinnear) was behind the attack but this was proved not to be the case.

It had become apparent that his close ally Meg Roylin (Celia Imrie) was involved and so to try and figure out if Trowbridge had any knowledge of what happened, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) hatched a plan.

They decided to get both Meg and the Prime Minister in the same room where she would confess to her involvement in the bombing.

She said the plan was carried out after it looked as if was going to leave the union and following the attack, Trowbridge would show leadership and bring them back into the fold.

There wasn’t meant to be any casualties but 43 people ended up being killed and it quickly became apparent Trowbridge had no idea of this as he began to attack Roylin.

However, the orders came from beyond Roylin as it was actually Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) who was behind it all without President Rayburn’s (Michael McKean) knowledge.

When the Vice President discovered that Kate knew, she explained that she thought it was the right decision in order to foster British unity and put an end to Scotland’s growing movement for independence.

Kate understood Penn’s reasoning initially but later decided she should no longer be in power and declared that she wanted to be vice president.

To try and help her get the job, Kate asked Hal Wyler () to tell the secretary of state about Penn’s involvement in the bombing but instead chose to speak to President Rayburn directly.

It later came out when Hal tried to explain what happened to Kate that the president got very upset after hearing the truth, so much so that he died.

At the point of finding out, Secret Service agents surrounded Penn and it was quickly realised that she was now the new President of the United States.

The Diplomat is available to watch on Netflix.
