Rugby league star Rob Burrow's widow says that she hopes people will "remember what a great guy he was" when they hear his final podcast.

The late rugby star died in June at the age of 41 after a four-and-a-half-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND). He was diagnosed in 2019, two years after calling time on his illustrious playing career, and even raised millions for charity to help combat the disease and raise awareness alongside his former team-mate and close friend, Kevin Sinfield.

His wife Lindsey Burrow was by his side when he recorded his final podcast series and hopes listeners will hear some of the "fun and the laughter" he enjoyed before his death. She wants people to "remember what a great guy he was" when they listen to the podcast, which will be made available on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio Leeds from September 26 - which would have been his 42nd birthday.

"Rob had so much enjoyment recording the podcast," Lindsey explained. "He would want people to hear the episodes and the fun and the laughter, that was what Rob was about. He never felt sorry for himself. He just got on with life and I think he’d be proud to have this series out. I really hope people enjoy listening to it and remember what a great guy Rob was.”

Following his tragic death, Lindsey paid tribute to the star and shared details of a personal message from Prince William which she and her family will "treasure forever". Lindsey, who spoke on Global MND Awareness Day on June 21, singled out a message from the Prince of Wales, who met Robin January when he was awarded a CBE.

She revealed: "The one that really sticks out and is so special to me, was a personal message, as a parent, from His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. That was really heartwarming, really sincere and that's something, as a family, we will treasure forever. Rob got to meet Prince William back in January when he was awarded a CBE. He was just a genuine, sincere future King of the country. That's a day we'll remember and treasure forever. To get that message from Prince William has given us a lot of comfort and will always hold a special place in my heart."

She detailed messages Rob left for the future, including birthday messages for their kids. She said: "aI know Rob has left messages on there for the children. At the minute it’s too raw to go and look through the machine but there are birthday messages on there, there are messages for the future." Lindsey went on to call her husband an "inspiration" to those in the MND community as a result of the manner in which he combatted the disease and strived to raise awareness.

Lindsey was also "incredibly proud to have been Rob's wife for 17-and-a-half years and to have three beautiful children with Rob."
