Rare 20p coin sells for £55 - and you may have one in your change

A 20p coin has sold for 275 times its original value on eBay - and you could potentially have one in your loose change.

The 20p was not a normal coin sadly, but an incredibly rare and sought after version, according to the Britannia Coin company. The 20p coin - described as the "holy grail" of change collecting - is an error coin. In November 2008, the Royal Mint struck a small number of 20p coins without a date.

This was the first time in more than three hundred years that coins with no date had entered circulation. The Royal Mint reports that of the 136 million Twenty Pence pieces minted that month, only about 250,000 coins were minted with this unique error. So, although the chances are slim, there could be one hanging around in your loose change.

One person was lucky enough to come across one and listed on eBay this month on June 17. The coin holder listed the item as "RARE UNDATED UK 20 PENCE COIN, MINT ERROR K30" and started the bidding at just 99p. The item soon attracted attention and he first bid was made - at £1 - just 50 minutes later. The second came two days later and that's when the bidding ware began.

The item overall received 34 bids with the winning bid being £55. The winner also paid £3.10 for economy delivery which rounded up the overall cost to £58.10. This case is a reminder that it's always important to check your change as you never know what might find its way in there.

If you find yourself in possession of a rare coin you may want to follow others and sell it. However, selling a coin on eBay is never guaranteed and a coin is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
