Patrick Mahomes makes Tom Brady admission after copying signature pre-game move

Patrick Mahomes has admitted one way he was inspired by NFL legend Tom Brady.

Several months ago, the Kansas City Chiefs star named the seven-time Super Bowl winner as the greatest quarterback of all time ahead of Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. The pair faced one another six times, with Mahomes and Brady winning three games each.

Brady has influenced many of the current crop of NFL players and the 28-year-old is no different based on his pre-game ritual. In a clip of Mahomes on the sidelines during a game, he mimicked how he believes quarterbacks normally run onto the field for a game, before explaining how Brady did it.

“You watch every quarterback run out of the tunnel and they just run out like this,” Mahomes said while imitating a slow jog. "And then when I come out I’m like ‘yeahhh!’, Tom [Brady] used to do that thing when he’d run down [the sideline] and yell.”

The clip then showed Mahomes doing the same thing, as he jumped up and down before yelling at the crowd and pumping them up before the action commenced. Brady announced his second NFL retirement earlier this year and is regarded by many as the sport’s greatest-ever player.

In the build-up to Super Bowl LVII in February, Mahomes commented on the qualities he believes Brady possessed that put him in a league of his own. “He has the Jordan in him — that will to win and that will to be the best,” Mahomes explained. “I think that’s what makes Tom so great.

“Even though he might not have the best arm or the best mobility, he’s still really good at both of those things and moving within the pocket and arm strength. And then his will to bring his teammates along is special. And his will to be great and be the best is special. That’s something that whenever I talk to Tom I try to learn as much as possible.

“He’s more than willing to give me some advice, which I think is pretty cool because he is the GOAT and someone I want to try and chase. But I know it’s a long ways away for me and I have to just continue to win football games.” Mahomes is carving out a great legacy of his own having already won two Super Bowls, two Super Bowl MVPs and two regular season MVP Awards.

His inspired performance in this year’s Super Bowl despite having an injured ankle is one of the best in recent memory and the Kansas City Chiefs star is hungry for more success. Last month, he vowed to do his absolute best to try and reach Brady’s tally of seven Super Bowl wins.

"Seven's a lot, but I'll strive to get as close as I can," Mahomes said. "To win seven Super Bowls and be in 10 Super Bowls, it's crazy to even think about, even for me today. The other stats kinda come with it. I knew at Texas Tech, I put up a lot of stats but didn't win games. When I got to the NFL, I knew I wanted to be a winner [first].

"Try to win Super Bowls and give my team the best that I can." The Chiefs have won two of their three games so far this season and they endeavour to win their third in a row when they travel to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets this weekend.
