Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offered route back into management after Frank Lampard rejection

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been approached by the Canadian national team about becoming their next manager.

Solskjaer, 51, hasn't returned to management since being sacked by his beloved United in November 2021. The Norwegian former striker has had multiple opportunities to get back on the touchline but passed on all of them, instead serving as a technical observer for UEFA.

Canada Soccer could make him his next offer as they continue to sound out candidates ahead of the 2026 World Cup which they're co-hosting with the United States and Mexico. According to the Evening Standard, Canada have already faced rejection from two other Premier League icons.

Jose Mourinho is said to have rejected the chance to interview for the role, as did ex-Chelsea star Frank Lampard, who didn't feel that it was the right opportunity to get his coaching career back on track. Former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has also been contacted by Canadian football chiefs as they seek to replace John Herdman, who left his post last year to manage MLS side Toronto.

Those overseeing the process have also listed a number of alternative options, including ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid coach Paul Clement and former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka. Another candidate to be interviewed is Forge boss Bobby Smyrniotis, who's considered one of the best coaches in the Canadian Premier League.

It's been theorised that attracting Clement would boost Canada's chances of appointing Carlo Ancelotti after he leaves Madrid. The legendary Italian boss - who Clement was assistant to at Real, Chelsea and Bayern Munich - has previously expressed his interest in managing Les Rogues, supporting them at the 2022 World Cup.

Like Ancelotti, Solskjaer hasn't ruled out a move into international football and the ex-United hero recently spoke to the Irish FA before ultimately deciding that the Ireland job wasn't for him. "I've got at least one club job in me," Solskjaer said during a recent trip to India.

"It has to be an interesting one, somewhere, an adventure, somewhere I can be myself. No disrespect but after you've managed Manchester United for three years it's like where do you go?

"I want to feel that pressure again. When you see the games, you miss it." He went on to say: "You always want to manage against the best football people in the world. The Premier League is the best league in the world, the most difficult.

"I had been there for three years. Yes, it was a hard job. It's an extraordinary job, but you're the face of the biggest and best club in the world. You have to be ready all the time to be scrutinised. So, I enjoyed it but I needed a break after I stepped away."
