As a travel journalist and podcaster, I have flown on many airlines and tested many bags in pursuit of the perfect cabin bag to avoid those pesky extra charges.

Frustratingly, different airlines have different policies regarding hand luggage sizes – Ryanair’s free allowance is 40 x 20 x 20 cm, EasyJet's under-the-seat bag is 45 x 36 x 20 cm, and WizzAir's free bag size is 40 x 30 x 20 cm. This can make finding a suitable cabin bag that will fit most airline bag sizers a tad tricky. Some airlines, like British Airways and KLM, will allow you to bring one carry-on baggage and one personal item.

A personal item is typically considered a handbag, laptop bag, small backpack, or camera case. Personal items should always be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

With reports of lost bags, fines for oversized cabin bags and massive at Heathrow Airport earlier this year, travelling with just hand luggage seems the smart thing to do this half term.
