Football hero Gordon McQueen's family are selling off his prized mementos, including his 1983 FA Cup winner's medal.

The 30 items, valued at £60,000, will also include his 1975 European Cup runners-up medal, his 1973 European Cup Winners Cup final runners-up medal and his 1974 Division One League Championship plaque.

McQueen, who made more than 300 top-flight appearances for both Man United and Leeds, died aged 70 in June last year following a battle with dementia, thought to have been caused by repeated heading of the ball.

His daughter Hayley, who works as a Sky Sports presenter, said: "My dad was never much of a hoarder or a collector, it's all about the memories for us as a family. We have some incredible memories of my dad, so we wanted to pass something on to people who can enjoy them, give collectors and fans a little bit of my dad's experience."

McQueen began his career at St Mirren in 1970, before Leeds paid £30,000 for him in 1972. He replaced England hero Jack Charlton in defence and enjoyed a formidable partnership with Norman Hunter as Leeds won the First Division in 1974.

He controversially moved from Leeds to their arch-rivals Manchester United for £500,000 in February 1978. He also made 30 appearances for Scotland and captained the team in a 1–1 draw against Romania in June 1975, in which he also scored his first ever international goal. He later moved into TV punditry before being diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2021.

The sale, which will take place on October 1, is being held by auctioneers Graham Budd, of Wellingborough, Northants. The same auction house will also sell a hoard of England star Viv Anderson's memorabilia on the same day.

David Convery, head of sporting memorabilia at Graham Budd Auctions, said: "We've seen a lot of interest already in these pieces, so we expect the collection to fetch some high prices on auction day."

He added: "Gordon McQueen means a lot to Scottish football fans. A brilliant international player who also shone for Manchester United, Leeds United and St Mirren - he was a true giant of 80s football."
