Logan Sargeant's F1 career is on the line as Carlos Sainz weighs up whether to replace the American at Williams.

Despite a rocky 2023, with numerous crashes and lacklustre performances, Sargeant managed to keep his place on the grid for 2024. Williams team boss James Vowles has acknowledged his progress this season.

But he continues to sound out other drivers over joining Alex Albon, who has recently committed to the team long-term. Vowles has been open about his interest in Sainz, a hot commodity on the grid with teams like Sauber, who will be Audi by 2026, also keen.

The Spaniard is on the market after Ferrari's bombshell move to sign Lewis Hamilton for 2025, leaving Sargeant's future with Williams hanging in the balance. In the run-up to the Spanish Grand Prix, Vowles offered measured praise for the 23-year-old.

The ex-Mercedes strategist said: "He is continuously evolving as an individual, as I hope he would be in that circumstance. Is he where I need him to be target-wise?

"And that's the big question of things. We need more from him, really, to be able to save his seat in that sort of circumstance."

Meanwhile, Vowles has lavished praises on Sainz, saying: "He's a race-winning driver that last year, against all odds, won in Singapore with a brilliant drive, and that's not the first time. He's intelligent in how he approaches things, logical, incredibly quick.

"I think any team on the grid would be fortunate to have someone like Carlos alongside them. The number one target is Carlos."

Sainz, who is preparing for his home Grand Prix, has said he remains undecided but that a decision is fast approaching. He explained: "The latest is a decision will be taken very soon. I don't want to wait any longer.

"It's getting to a point where it's taking space out of my head for quite a few weeks and months now. It's time to make a decision and the decision will be taken soon. Hopefully soon we will have things to talk about."
