This Sunday, rather than watch United host in the , he headed to Enschede to catch FC Twente against Ajax in a heavyweight clash in the Dutch top flight. He is likely to be warmly welcomed by both sets of supporters at the De Grolsch Veste, given his allegiances on both sides.

Ten Hag began his playing career at Twente in 1989 and ended up turning out for the Dutch club over three separate spells. He made 257 appearances in total for Twente, chipping in with six goals and 11 assists from defence before he retired in 2002.
After gaining experience with Go Ahead Eagles, reserves and Utrecht, Ten Hag enjoyed the best period of his managerial career at Ajax between 2018 and 2022. He won 73 per cent of his matches in charge and lifted two Eredivisie titles and three domestic cups before getting the United job.
It remains to be seen how long Ten Hag will be without a management job, having been by the sacking at Old Trafford after two and a half years of work. He summed up his feelings in shortly after Amorim was confirmed as his replacement.
