Ed Sheeran makes promise to celebrating Ipswich stars and toasts promotion in Miami

Ed Sheeran celebrated his beloved Ipswich Town winning promotion to the Premier League all the way from Miami - but he's promised to be back to join the party in a few days.

The music superstar is a boyhood fan of the Tractor Boys, who beat Huddersfield 2-0 at home on Saturday to confirm second place in the Championship, which gives them automatic promotion. Ipswich will now return to the top flight of English football for the first time in 22 years, with Kieran McKenna's side securing back-to-back promotions after being as low as the third tier last season.

Sheeran, 33, couldn't be at Portman Road, though, because he's performing at the Miami Grand Prix in Florida this weekend. Instead, the 'Shape of You' singer was up at 7am to watch the game from a swanky hotel, and met up with some fellow Ipswich supporters who he'd met by chance at the Formula 1 circuit on Friday.

In a video shared on Instagram, Sheeran was seen raising a toast to the Tractor Boys and chanting with the three other fans. The beers were flowing after their promotion was confirmed and Sheeran even FaceTimed Ipswich's players who were celebrating in the dressing room.

"Where are you, mate?" forward George Hirst asked. "I'm in Miami, I've gotta pay for the sponsorship somehow!" Sheeran replied, as he sponsored the club's shirts this season and plans to again next term for their Premier League campaign.

"I'm back on Wednesday, do you guys wanna go out?" he then asked. "Obviously!" Hirst responded. Sheeran then said: "I'll be in touch with Marcus, we'll find somewhere. Congrats guys, well done."

In a separate post, Sheeran was shown taking a sip of his beer before one of the fans asked: "What does that taste like?" Turning to the camera, he beamed: "It tastes like promotion!"

The Grammy-winning artist had written as the caption to his main Instagram post: "Back to back promotions for @ipswichtown. Very emotional. It wasn't that long ago I was sat at Portman Road watching them lose in League One with 11k people watching.

"This is huge for the club, huge for the town, and huge for football, showing anything can happen with belief and passion. Congrats to all the players, people at the club, and of course super Kieran.

"Sorry I can't be there to celebrate but we don’t want another betting company as the sponsor next season eh. Uppa town. Emotional. See you in the Prem xx"
