Bruno Fernandes sends ex-Man Utd team-mate social media warning after heartbreak

Bruno Fernandes has jokingly slammed former teammate Scott McTominay for scoring against him on his birthday.

The former Manchester United team-mates were reunited on Sunday in Lisbon as their national teams Portugal and Scotland collided. It comes just weeks after McTominay left Old Trafford in a £21m move to Italian giants Napoli.

McTominay opened the scoring to extend his brilliant recent goalscoring run. The 27-year-old scored a career-best ten goals for United last term, while he has found the net on ten occasions over the past 18 months for Scotland.

Fernandes was not best pleased at seeing his former colleague find the net, particularly on the day he was toasting his 30th birthday. Taking to Instagram, McTominay wrote: “We are down but we must trust [the] process of improving like we have shown these last two games. Thank you to the away fans for the incredible support.”

Fernandes replied: “I was already missing you my guy but don’t score again at my birthday against me,” alongside an angry emoji.

In the end, McTominay’s goal meant little. Fernandes equalised before Cristiano Ronaldo snatched victory for Portugal late on.

After scoring twice for Scotland over the latest international break, McTominay will be keen to extend his run once he returns to Naples. The midfielder has made three appearances for Napoli so far but is yet to find the net.

McTominay will be aiming to score his first goal for his new club against Cagliari away from home. His former club Man United in the meantime take on Southampton at St Mary’s.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag recently expressed his disappointment at McTominay moving on. Speaking earlier this month, he said: “It is a little bit mixed. I am very happy for him, but it is mixed because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him.

“He is Manchester United in everything, he was so important for Manchester United. He was here for over 22 years but unfortunately it is the rules.

“Homegrown players bring more value and that is not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it is a good deal. Scott is happy with it, and Napoli and us.”

Man United bolstered their midfield options amid McTominay’s exit after striking a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils spent an initial £42m to sign the Uruguayan, who signed a five-year contract.

Ugarte has yet to make his debut for the Red Devils following his summer move to Old Trafford but that could potentially come against Southampton this weekend.
