A boy who had dreams of growing up to become a police officer died after eating a strawberry from a school fundraiser.

Trey Major Harris, just eight, is thought to have suffered from an allergic reaction from the fruit, although at the time of writing this is unconfirmed. The Kentucky youngster, who was in the second grade at Hanson Elementary School, has now been laid to rest.

Police were called out on March 15 to the home for an eight-year-old boy who was unresponsive and not breathing. The child was rushed to the hospital before any officers arrived at the property and a short time later the authorities sadly confirmed that the boy had died.

The family told police that their son had eaten multiple strawberries from a school fundraiser during the previous night, reports 14 News. They said Trey started to show signs of an allergic reaction, including a rash.

His family gave him Benadryl for the symptoms and also soaked him in a bath. However, he failed to improve and his family took him to the emergency room around 10.30pm. They brought him home several hours later.

Police said the family tried to wake him up for school later that morning and found he was unresponsive. Madisonville Police Department Mayor Jason McKnight said at the time of his death: "While we were investigating, several staff at the hospital had advised that other people had came in to the hospital complaining of rashes and other ailments concurrent with some type of allergic reaction, and they had ate strawberries from this fundraiser.”

Trey’s stepfather, Antonio Person, 33, was charged with trafficking fentanyl as well as other drug and gun possession charges. Initially, health officials were concerned something was wrong with the strawberries before they then believed Trey had an allergic reaction. The coroner said authorities are still waiting on toxicology reports to determine Trey’s official cause of death.

Trey's funeral was held on March 23 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Earlington. According to his obituary he "loved all things sports and had special interests in baseball, basketball, skateboarding, and football. "He had an immense love for music having an extraordinary passion for rap music, and his favourite artists included Rod Wave, Bossman DLow, & Finesse." The touching tribute also said that Trey, "brought immense love," and he will be "forever missed".
