BBC Death In Paradise fans unearth Don Gilet's previous role as he replaces Ralf Little

Don Gilet was recently announced to take over Ralf Little in Death In Paradise -

The former EastEnders actor, known for his portrayal of Walford serial killer Lucas Johnson, first appeared in the BBC One show in 2015, where he also played a villain when Kris Marshall was the detective Humphrey Goodman. At the time, Don slipped into the role of a murderer who killed the owner of a rum distillery during a séance.

As bosses have announced, Don will make his debut as the new detective during this year's Christmas special, before returning to the program for a new series in 2025.

While the move was celebrated, due to Don being the first black actor in the show's lead role, it was also promptly commented on X, formerly known as Twitter, as fans remembered Don's original Death In Paradise debut.

"Ah ha was in Series 4 Ep1, got rid of 2 people! Think avid fans wouldn't notice! But welcome anyway Don Gilet, you're going to be brilliant, because you're such a fabulous actor. Have to admit some brilliant actors have passed through Death in Paradise", one penned.

Another argued: "I like him but I guess this throws contingency out the window", while a third continued: "he's already been in it as a killer of his boss at a rum distillery... Why must TV shows keep doing this I love Death in Paradise but now I can't watch because I just see him in the part he played in it."

One fan speculated that Don Gilet's previous role could be an opportunity for big twists in upcoming storylines: "Are they going to acknowledge his previous involvement in the show, or just make him a new character? Twin maybe?"

Another exasperated viewer chimed in: "Wasn’t he a murderer in season 4? How they gonna explain that one?" Just as a final fan concluded: "Hasn't he already been a baddie in this? In the Mama Beth episode?"

But an actor making double appearances in the show isn't uncommon as Don's predecessor Ralf also made a guest appearance in Death In Paradise, six years prior to his starring role as DI Neville Parker.

Don will be taking on the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson and was one of the many candidates tipped to potentially replace Ralf in the popular series. Despite the criticism which followed the announcement of Don's upcoming stint, Ralf was over the moon to find out who would replace him.

Taking to his Instagram account, the actor wrote: "I have actually known for a couple of weeks, but obviously couldn't say anything", before penning a heartfelt message to his successor.

"The new detective is the wonderful Don Gilet! And I just wanna say, from me to you, Don, I hope you have the most wonderful time. It's the most magical experience, and I just hope you just get everything out of it, and I wish you the best of luck. I'm absolutely sure you're going to be magnificent."
