*Warning: Contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Bad Sisters*
The hotly-anticipated second series of Apple TV's perfectly-rated comedy is set to return tomorrow (November 13), two years after its acclaimed debut.
Boasting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Bad Sisters centres on a whodunnit story featuring five Garvey sisters: Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka. The sisters face an insurance investigation after Grace's abusive husband unexpectedly dies, and they must uncover who murdered him in the hopes of clearing their names.
Starring Sharon Horgan, who also penned the BAFTA-winning drama, the first instalment unravelled the mystery in a non-linear style that kept viewers guessing until the very end.
Although the murderer was revealed in a plot twist at the end of season one, the sisters will be confronted with new secrets in the forthcoming season, which promises various new cast members.
For fans who haven't revisited the drama since its debut, we break down everything you need to know before watching season two.
Who killed John Paul?Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) killed her husband John Paul. He had been consistently abusive towards her, so she naturally had the motive to kill him. However, her confession came as a twist because she had largely defended John Paul's behaviour throughout the series and her sisters seemed more likely to do the deed.
In the final episode, she recounts the events around his death. The married couple were alone at the cabin and got into an argument. John Paul then revealed that he had a sexual encounter with Eva 10 years prior, claiming that she 'seduced' him. Grace confronted him about the supposed encounter and asked what exactly he did to Eva. She quickly worked out that he sexually assaulted Eva, which led to her infertility.
In a fit of rage, Grace strangled her husband to death. She broke down crying afterwards and screamed out: "You f******* monster." She then went downstairs and watched the 1968 film Isadora, which inspired her to stage the murder as an accidental scarf strangulation.
In the present day, Matt also watches Isadora and discovers that John Paul's crime scene was staged. Knowing that Grace killed John Paul, Matt is conflicted but promises not to tell the police what happened.
Where does Season 2 pick up?The second series is set two years after John Paul's murder and follows the sisters carrying on with their lives as normal until "past truths resurface."
The official synopsis reads: "Two years after the “accidental death” of Grace’s abusive husband, the close-knit Garvey sisters may have moved on, but when past truths resurface, the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight, suspicions are at an all-time high, lies are told, secrets are revealed and the sisters are forced to work out who they can trust."
Who is in the Season 2 cast?In addition to its beloved core cast—including Horgan, Duff, Eve Hewson, Sarah Greene, and Eva Birthistle—the second season will introduce new cast members.
Barry Ward will return as Detective Fergal Loftus, accompanied by his sharp-eyed assistant, Una Houlihan, played by Sex Education star Thaddea Graham.
Owen McDonnell also joins the cast as Grace's new love interest, Ian Reilly. The series begins with the couple preparing for their wedding.
