Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres plan speaks volumes amid Kai Havertz setback

Send Push

Viktor Gyokeres has yet to find consistency at Arsenal, struggling to score goals on a regular basis since his £55million move from Sporting CP in the summer.

The 27-year-old, who pushed for a move to the Emirates Stadium over Manchester United, has so far netted three times in 10 games across all competitions. However, his last strike came nearly a month ago.

Unlike at Sporting, Gyokeres has sometimes looked a bit lost on the pitch as he continues to bed in, though his work elsewhere remains vital.

According to the Daily Mail, Gyokeres would not have started the season as Arsenal's No.9 if it weren't for Kai Havertz'sinjury.

It's said that Gyokeres was identified as someone who 'needed time to bed into a new league, system, and environment,' but Arsenal's tricky fixture list at the start of the season meant there were few real alternatives.

Havertz has so far missed the last six weeks with a knee injury picked up during the opening day victory against United.

He underwent a minor procedure to fix the problem and he could be back available for selection after the October international break.

Meanwhile, Glenn Hoddle has suggested that a reliable No.9 is still the one thing the Gunners are lacking - though Gyokeres could go on to become that man.

"The only missing link at the moment is a No.9 that is going to put the ball in the back of the net, time and time again," he told Premier League Productions.

"Gyokeres might end up like that, I don't know, I think that is the only question mark there."

Mikel Arteta is confident that the Swede will soon contribute with more goals.

"What I sense is that he's doing better and better things every game," Arteta said.

"He was denied a few times with blocks, and then he hit the post, but I think overall his performance was exceptional.

"Again, his work was really good, and yeah, we want him to be scoring goals, but if he doesn’t do that, at least to do everything as he’s doing for the team, because he’s helping the team a lot."
