All Saints icon Melanie Blatt to release new music almost two decades after last offering

All Saints star Melanie Blatt is heading back to the studio and recording a new song - with hopes she will enjoy renewed chart success.

The 49-year-old singer achieved international success in the late 1990s and early 2000s as one quarter of chart topping band All Saints alongside bandmates Shaznay Lewis, 48, and Canadian sisters Natalie and Nicole Appleton, aged 50 and 49 respectively. Mel has struggled to break through on the charts as a solo artist but hopes to achieve new solo highs with a new track.

As part of All Saints, she enjoyed UK Top 40 success with five albums - including the 2000 chart topping Saints & Sinners - and landed a string of number one singles with Never Ever in 1997, Under the Bridge and Lady Marmalade in 1998 and the chart topping tracks Pure Shores and Black Coffee in 2000. Mel’s solo efforts were less successful as her 2003 song Do Me Wrong stalled at number 18 in the UK, and 2005 follow up See Me failed to crack the Top 40 - ranking at number 78.

However, she is now said to be hitting the studio to try her luck anew - with plans to release her first music in more than a decade. There are hopes that if the new offering does well, she will have momentum to create further new music.

A source told The Sun: “Mel isn’t a very confident singer and it has taken a lot for her to get back in the studio. But she has seen her bandmate Shaznay Lewis do it this year and wants to push herself."

The source goes on to conclude that those close to Mel are hoping she will develop the confidence to release even more music - teasing that she is working with London-based producer KDA. They said: "The plan is for her song with KDA to come out soon and everyone around her is hoping it will encourage her to continue with more music.”

Fellow All Saints star Shazney is also in the process of reviving her solo career - after an agonising ten year hiatus. The songstress reached number 22 in the album charts in 2004 with her debut solo effort, titled Open. But it was a full ten years before she released any new music - with singles Miracle and Kiss of Life being released this year. The two new singles precede a long awaited sophomore album, titled Pages, set for release on 17 May.

Meanwhile Natalie and Nicole enjoyed some success as a duo - releasing music under the name Appleton. The sisters released their debut album, titled Everything’s Eventual, in 2003, and it reached number 9 in the charts. While their debut single Fantasy hit number 2 in 2002 and second single Don’t Worry reached number 5. They had been due to release a second album - but this was scrapped as All Saints decided to reform in 2005 after a four year hiatus.
